Where to travel this holiday season
Festive Season in the travel industry is defined as December 15th through January January 7th, although it loosely begins following the Thanksgiving holiday in the US.
People travel over the winter holidays for various reasons - taking advantage of school breaks, those who celebrate Christmas holidays may want to lean into the season with visits to snowy or festive locales, and many travelers want to escape the cold weather with a visit to warmer climates.
Our friends at Allianz Partners have compiled the top Festive destinations from the past few years and not surprisingly, New York City is the favorite domestic Festive Season destination and Cancún dominates the top spot internationally.
New York in the winter immediately evokes images of ice skating in Rockefeller Center, Christmas shopping on 5th Avenue, and over the top Christmas displays.
Cancún is wonderfully warm and inviting at Christmas time and a great respite from the holiday hustle and bustle.
Orlando, Florida, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Seattle all vie for the top three spots in the U.S. year after year, while London, Cabo and San Juan, Puerto Rico make up the top 3 internationally.
Take advantage of your kids days off from school to hit the Magic Kingdom in Orlando or Disneyland on the West Coast. Los Angeles isn’t all that festive in the winter months but the weather is great and there is a lot to do.
Cabo is a great escape, especially for Californians who can get there in under 3 hours from LAX, and Puerto Rico is perfect for travelers who want to get away but don’t want to deal with passport applications.
Wherever you are planning to go this Festive Season, pack your patience as well as your sunscreen because airports will be busy and bad weather can affect even the best laid travel plans.
